    SCHÄFER Container Systems history

    1937

    Founding of the company
    On 16th. January 1937, the following entry appeared in the Burbach official registry: Fritz Schäfer – manufacture of metal goods of all kinds. The first products were manufactured in the cellar of the house he lived in.

    The first products:
    • Transport boxes
    • Stove pipes
    • Filling shovels
    • Baking tins

    1948

    Relocating the business
    The change to series production for transport boxes meant that the original production facilities soon became too small and so operations were transferred to the old “Dorfwiese” (village green) in Neunkirchen-Salchendorf in 1948.

    1951

    Four brothers all pulling together
    The four sons, Hans, Gerhard, Manfred and Theo Schäfer take on the management of the young enterprise in 1951. In addition to their manufacturing operations, they decide to expand the lucrative retail business.

    1952

    The EMW
    In December, the EMW, Inronmongers and Hardware Dealers, is founded: “Trading with industrial raw materials and products of all kinds.”

    1962

    The “Pfannenberg”
    The twins Manfred and Theo Schäfer take over the former iron ore mine “Pfannenberger Einigkeit". “Pfannenberg GmbH” is founded, later to be renamed SCHÄFER WERKE GMBH.

    1970

    SCHÄFER WERKE GMBH
    SCHÄFER develops the first KEG with a stainless steel liner and polyurethane (PU) jacket: the PLUS KEG's successful career is launched.

    1978

    Reusable KEGs

    SCHÄFER develops the first KEG with a stainless steel liner and polyurethane (PU) jacket: the PLUS KEG's successful career is launched.

    1983

    Strong brands
    The KEGs' advertising effectiveness is improved. Coloured decors and brewery logos make SCHÄFER KEGs an effective brand carrier.

    1985

    Optimisation of safety and logistics
    The KEGs are fitted with a safety bursting point and are GS approved to create a new standard of safety. The datixPLUS character code provides the basis for logistics.

    1989

    Innovations
    SCHÄFER presents three newly developed products at the Interbrau:
    SOFT DRINK KEG, junior PLUS KEG and keggy, the KEG with the integrated
    CO2 supply.

    1990

    Ecological advances
    SCHÄFER succeeds in manufacturing a CFC-free PU jacket and increases user value by enabling partial repairs. Two significant environmental benefits.

    1992

    KEG identification
    Transponders are introduced for KEG Identification. Combined with datixPLUS, this is the perfect control and logistics system.

    1993

    Coca Cola inmould labelling
    Inmould labelling perfects the coloured decoration. SCHÄFER is first on the market to receive Coca-Cola Approval.

    1995

    100% stainless steel KEGs
    SCHÄFER begins production of 100% steel KEGs: With SUDEX KEGs, SCHÄFER now has a comprehensive KEG range. SCHÄFER is the first in the industry to gain DIN EN ISO 9001 TÜV-Cert approval.

    1996

    Certification
    In October, the SCHÄFER Sudex s.r.o. plant also receives DIN EN ISO 9001 TÜV-Cert approval.

    1998

    New KEGs
    Partly PU-coated SOFT DRINK KEGs and junior PLUS KEGs supplement the product range, naturally with proven SCHÄFER benefits, like safety bursting point and character code, stackability and noise reduction.

    2000

    Award-winning design
    The new ECO KEG wins two of the most coveted international design awards:
    iF Ecology Design Award 2000
    iF Product Design Award 2000.

    2001

    The modern dispensing experience
    freshKEG: genuine draught beer, any place, any time. The new generation of SCHÄFER KEGnology® is presented at the drinktec in Munich.

    IBC
    The Container Systems division expands its range to include IBCs (intermediate bulk containers) of stainless steel for liquid and paste-like substances, solid materials and granulate.

    2006

    smartDraft
    smartDraft™: the dispensing revolution for restaurants and catering. Ingeniously simple, no maintenance, no cleaning.

    2009

    The Non-returnable KEG
    A new milestone in KEG history is introduced at the drinktec 2009 in Munich. The SCHÄFER non-returnable KEG in stainless steel! Strong. Light. Economical.

    smartDraft grows
    Additions to the smartDraft™ family:
    smartDraft™ MINI, ideal for party cellars, beer gardens or street sales
    smartDraft™ Tropical with an integrated cooler; fresh draught beer any place, any time.
    smartDraft™ MAX can accommodate two open smartDRAFT™ KEGs as well as two others that are being pre-cooled.

    2010

    Heatable IBC
    SCHÄFER Container Systems successfully launches the new RCB heatable container.
